FAQ

What is Conference interpreting?

Conference interpreting is a demanding occupation practiced by highly trained and knowledgeable professionals. Conference interpreters listen to speeches, presentations, debates and other forms of spoken discourse in one language, and “relay” them into another language. Most often, this work is done simultaneously—through the use of headphones and microphones— but it can also be done consecutively, with the original speaker pausing at key moments to allow the interpreter to deliver segments of the speech. The interpretations are often very technical, dealing with new laws or policies, financial or market analysis, government programs, corporate strategies, engineering or other technological advances.

What is Simultaneous interpretation (SI)?

It is working in a team at a conference or large meeting, the interpreter sits in a soundproof booth (there are separate booths for each conference language) and immediately converts what is being said, so listeners hear the interpretation through an earpiece while the speaker is still speaking. A variation of this is whispering, or chuchotage, where the interpreter sits near one person or a small group and whispers the translation as the speaker carries on. Sign language interpreting is also usually simultaneous.

What is Consecutive interpretation (CI)?

This type of interpretation is more common in smaller meetings and discussions, the speaker will pause after each sentence or point and wait while the interpreter translates what is being said into the appropriate language.

What is the difference between translation and interpreting?

Translation calls upon similar skills, but there are some important distinctions between translation and interpreting. Translation is the transfer of written texts from one language to another, and is usually done before the end user of the translation reads the text. Translators can therefore take the time to use reference materials and to revise during the translation process. In contrast, interpreters work while end users are physically present and must deliver the product in real time. There is no time to consult, check, or revise – the interpretation must be delivered with confidence and without hesitation.

How does the online simultaneous interpretation (video remote interpreting) work?

This type of interpretation is tailored to companies and individuals that use the internet to deliver presentations about specific subjects. These “video conferences”, which happen in real time, are then retransmitted in the target language to another link on the web. This type of service can be requested by the speaker or by the event's organiser, or by the attendee(s).

What is escort interpreting?

In escort interpreting, the interpreter is there to interpret (or orally translate) everything that a client says into the target language and also to interpret everything else that is said from that foreign language into the client’s language. In other words, the escort interpreter is there to make sure both the client and those around the client understand everything that is communicated.

An escort interpreter (sometimes called travel interpreter or escorting interpreter) can behave almost as an assistant, helping clients to navigate while they are traveling on business trips. These interpreters may accompany clients to a single meeting or to a handful of meetings.
